The Fourth of July is almost here. And what better way to get in the right frame of mind than sharing a bit of history about the day, AND 14 Images of Fireworks.
We all know that the Fourth of July is ALL about the fireworks. But do you know why that is? Well as it turns out, this tradition actually does date back to America gaining it’s independence.
On July 4th, 1977; the people of Philadelphia came together to watch their new nation’s sky illuminated in a grand display meant to raise spirits. They wanted to do this because the nation was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War.
“I think they wanted to create a morale booster, and it worked,” James R. Heintze, author of The Fourth of July Encyclopedia, told USA Today. “The news spread, and Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks took hold quickly in other places.”
John Adams even wrote his wife a letter the day before. In that letter he said:
“I am apt to believe that [Independence Day] will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival,” he wrote. “It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”
Well Mr. Adams, you will be happy to know that this day has remained very festive after all these years. Probably even more than you could have ever imagined.
